Small tornado touches down in Whiteside Co.

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. —

The National Weather Service says a small tornado touched down in a rural area of northwestern Illinois, but no major damage or injuries were reported.

The twister was reported in the Whiteside County community of Prophetstown around 5:40 p.m. on Thursday. Authorities there said Friday morning that there were some downed trees, but no other damage.

Meteorologist John Haase said wind gusts in the region reached up to 75 miles per hour as storms moved through the region.

Meanwhile, Illinois utility companies reported scattered outages early Friday. About 7,000 Ameren Illinois customers were without power, most of them in Coles and Perry counties. ComEd's outages were mostly in Winnebago County.
