Softball: Mohawks take another step toward state tournament

BELLEVUE — Gabby Tath threw a four-hit shutout and got plenty of offensive support as Marquette Catholic defeated visiting Lisbon 5-0 on Friday night to advance to the Iowa Class 1A Region 4 championship softball game.

The Mohawks (33-6) will face New London at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Wilton, with the winner advancing to the state tournament. New London beat Lone Tree 13-2 in Friday’s semifinals. New London is ranked third in the statewide 1A rankings, while Marquette is 11th.

Marquette struck quickly Friday night, scoring a run in the first inning and then increasing the lead to 4-0 in the second.

Anna Ambrosy had three hits and scored three runs from the leadoff spot for Marquette. Blake Banowetz drove in a pair of runs for the Mohawks, who totaled 12 hits.
