The Clinton County Administration building hours will be extended until 6 p.m. on Mondays for a 90-day trial period.
The Clinton County Board of Supervisors have discussed the possibility of extending the hours for awhile. Survey cards were distributed to members of the public who visited the building during regular business hours. The board has said the general consensus of the surveys was that people want the building’s hours extended.
The board said the various offices would not be required to participate in the longer hours. They said that decision would be for the elected official or department head to make. Chairwoman Jill Davisson said the board would choose a week when they would hold their meeting later in the day.
“Whether or not there is (a demand) for the other departments, we don’t know. And we won’t know until we try it or we don’t try it or whatever we do,” said Supervisor Dennis Starling. He said some departments that started with the extended hours may see that there is no need for it.
The board said departments can have a skeleton crew staffing the extra time. Department heads are asked to manage employees’ hours to try to avoid overtime. Most department heads and elected officials said they would have employees come in later to cut the hours. Rhonda McIntyre, county treasurer, said she would cut the Saturday hours.
The board approved extending hours in the Administration Building beginning July 19. Department heads and elected officials were asked to let County Auditor Eric Van Lancker know if they will be extending their hours so he could get advertisements in the local newspapers.
“I think the one thing that we will gain from this is if it doesn’t work, if it’s used very little at least at that point, we can say to the public when we get criticized for not being available, ‘hey, we did offer it. It was not utilized to the point that it was effective for us to stay open,’” said Davisson.
