CLINTON — A Clinton man has been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison in connection with a sex abuse case.

Michael W. Armstrong was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Clinton’s Eagle Point Park in August 2005. As part of a plea agreement, Armstrong on Tuesday was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on a third-degree sex abuse charge, a Class C felony, and up to five years in prison on an assault with intent to commit sexual abuse causing bodily injury charge.

The latter charge is a class D felony and carries a five-year prison term. The terms will be served consecutively.

Armstrong pleaded guilty Oct. 26. Armstrong also had been charged with two counts of second-degree sex abuse in connection with the assault, but those charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Because of the nature of the conviction, Armstrong also will be subject to a special sentence in which he will be on probation for life with the Iowa Department of Corrections upon release.

Armstrong’s brother, Robert, also was charged with four counts of sexual abuse in connection with the case. His case is proceeding to trial.
