BLACK HAWK, S.D. — Brad R. Boardsen, age 45, of Black Hawk, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Brad was born December 25, 1963, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of the late Danny R. Boardsen and the late Sharon J. Boardsen-Smith.

Brad was a dedicated and loving father. He enjoyed the outdoors, was an avid hunter and fisherman. Brad was an accomplished golfer who played many years at Valley Oaks Country Club. He authored an inspiring book, “The Legend of Greenhorn.” He hiked the entire Appalachian Trail for the charity Volunteers in Medicine. Brad’s nickname on the trail was “cree” from the Indian tribe meaning “one who speaks our language” for his uncanny ability to mimic bird calls.

Brad was a highly skilled optician. He pioneered the development of a mobile prescription eyewear laboratory. He was also the founder and President of Eye Lenses, Inc. Throughout his career he cultivated many new friendships across the country. He also made it a priority to stay in touch with his hometown friends.

Although Brad’s life was cut short, he lived what he was given to the fullest. He didn’t wait until the end to experience his bucket list. He lived and worked all the way from Canada to the Caribbean.

Survivors include his grandmother, Marjorie Graves of Clinton; brother, Danny R. Boardsen II of Moberly, MO; sister, Becky D. Boardsen of Boulder, CO; and 3-year old daughter, Aleigha Bradlee Yeager of Black Hawk, SD. He is also survived by 2 nieces and a nephew. He will be missed by his hunting dog, Shiloh. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandfather, Donald B Graves of Clinton; and his grandparents, Jensina and Ingvard Boardsen of Clinton.

Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church, 439 3rd Ave. So., Clinton, IA 52732. The visitation and photo tribute commences at 10:00 a.m. The memorial service follows at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Stacy officiating. A marker will be placed at the Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established for Brad’s children’s benefit. If you’re interested in donating, the name of the fund is: Memorial Fund for Brad Boardsen’s Children. Donations will be accepted at the memorial service or can be deposited at any Wells Fargo Bank.
