CLINTON — People traveling into Clinton from Illinois can expect heavier traffic and detours during the next 13 days. As of 5 a.m. Monday, the Iowa 136 bridge will be closed for replacement work on the barrier rail on the south side of the bridge.

Mark Brandl, the Davenport resident construction engineer for the Iowa Department of Transportation, said this $1.1 million project was originally scheduled for last year, but had been postponed due to other necessary projects. The bridge project is comprised of several parts, including cleaning the bridge, which is scheduled to be finished by Thursday night.

Other portions of the project include the replace ment of a hand rail on the north side of the bridge and revamping the lighting on the bridge with a focus on the navigation lights. Brandl said these projects may be fit into the 13-day closure. If they do not, he said they would be done at a later time and any possible road closures would take place at night.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured to the U.S. 30 bridge. He said people should be aware that the U.S. 30 bridge could be busier due to the detour. He also encouraged people to take their time and use caution when detouring in traffic.
