The city of Fulton is investigating the death of a volunteer miller at the city-owned de Immigrant windmill over the weekend.

Ronald Venema, chief volunteer miller at De Immigrant, died early Sunday morning following a fall at the mill on Friday. A statement released from Fulton Tourism Director Heather Bennett said that Venema was performing closing duties when he fell a distance inside of the mill. A second volunteer miller responded immediately as did an off-duty miller.

Fulton police and emergency personnel were called to the scene, and Venema was airlifted to the trauma unit in Peoria, Ill. He suffered severe head trauma and died.

A representative for the city said that both the millers and the city would be looking into the death and that there was no eyewitness to Venema’s fall.

The windmill and Windmill Cultural Center will be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
