CLINTON — A Clinton police officer has been recognized by the state for his work with traffic safety.

Corporal William Greenwalt received the Commissioner’s Special Award for Traffic Safety at the 2009 Annual Governor’s Highway Safety Conference in Des Moines.

In recognizing Greenwalt, the following comments were made by Wendie Nerem, the Area Administrator for the GTSB: “Officer Greenwalt has been with the Clinton Police Department since 1991. During that time he has been an active supporter of highway safety, promoting safe driving within the department as a driving instructor as well as within the community.

“He has taken a very active role in the special enforcement opportunities within the Clinton Police Department and has been a leader in organizing and coordinating several successful multi-jurisdictional enforcement projects.”

She said projects he coordinated have involved several agencies along with sheriff and police agencies from different states.

“Cpl. Greenwalt recognizes the importance and the effectiveness of the multi-jurisdictional concept and the resulting reduction in death and injuries on Iowa’s highways,” she said. Presenting the award were Commissioner Eugene T. Meyer, Iowa Department of Public Safety, and Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau Chief Larry Sauer.
