Billie Jean Conner delivered a two-run single with two outs in the fourth inning to lead Morrison to its second third-place finish in the past three years Saturday at the Illinois Class 2A softball state tournament.

The Fillies (26-13) defeated Alton Marquette 3-2 in the consolation game. Coal City defeated Johnston City for the championship.

Alton Marquette (29-7) had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning on a home run by Mia Stack.

Morrison rallied in the bottom of the fourth, when it had three of its sixth total hits.

Freshman Kaitlyn Finneran started the comeback when she reached on a walk by Alexis Silkwood. Finneran stole second and advanced to third base on a one-out bunt single by Allie Hanson. Hanson reached second on a fielder’s choice when Ashley Vegter hit a bunt single to load the bases. Morgan Ammon popped out to second base, but Conner, a freshman who was batting ninth in the order, delivered the two-run single to put Morrison ahead 3-2. Vegter also tried to score on the play but was thrown out on first baseman Katie Hill’s relay throw from center fielder Kaylin Beile.

Marquette threatened in the fifth against Morrison starter Christie Wiersema, loading the bases on a single and two walks with one out. But Wiersema struck out Bailey McAfee swinging and Kari Shipley looking to get out of the jam. Wiersema struck out 10 batters over five innings.

Danielle Stralow replaced Wiersema in the sixth and retired the side in order before getting into trouble in the seventh.

Silkwood led off with a double, and Stack was safe on a sacrifice fieder’s choice, with Silkwood taking third. After Stack stole second base, Trish Militello grounded to shortstop Finneran, who threw out Silkwood at home. Stralow then struck out Kate Dunn and got McAfee to fly out to end the game.

Each team scored a run in the first inning.

Silkwood led off with a single for Marquette, stole second base and scored on Dunn’s two-out single up the middle. Morrison pulled even in the bottom half when Wiersema doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Finneran.
