A Fulton man was seriously injured after an almost 30-foot fall from Lock and Dam 11 in Dubuque.

Tom Groharing, 49, of Fulton, was working at the lock and dam for Midwest Foundation Corporation from Tremont, Ill. According to the company’s president, Tim Troyer, the workers were removing concrete when Groharing fell at the lock and dam late Tuesday morning.

Groharing was taken to Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque and later was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Troyer said his condition is serious, but stable. Representatives from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics would not release Groharing’s official medical status.

An investigation has not been started and the incident has not been filed with the Iowa Division of Labor Services/ Iowa Occupational Safety & Health Administration, said Gail Sheridan-Lucht, attorney for the Labor Commissioner. She said employers are not required to report accidents right away, unless there is a fatality or more than one employee is involved. She said an investigation could be pursued by the Iowa office, depending on the matter of jurisdiction.
