CLINTON — The Clinton County Community Development Association awarded 30 grants Wednesday totaling $500,000 to different organizations throughout the community.

Topping the list of recipients was the Goose Lake Fire Department, which received $60,000 to purchase a used fire truck.

The Clinton Community School District will also collect a check worth $55,000 for a new welding program.

Students from Camanche, Clinton and Northeast high schools will receive community college credit while taking classes in the welding lab.

CCCDA board member Tom Fullerton, who serves on a committee that oversees the awarding of grants, said organizations are selected based on a scoring system to how well they answer four questions. The criteria includes how well will the program benefit the citizens of Clinton County, how does it impact tourism and job creation and how will it improve the quality of life.

“Overall, I think it was well diversified to various agencies throughout the county,” Fullerton said. “We were pleased to be able to put another half million dollars to non-profit organizations throughout the county.”

Fullerton said the CCCDA received 42 applications this year for Fund B projects. In the spring, the CCCDA will award grants for Fund A, which goes to groups requesting more than $75,000.

Other recipients this year include the Sawmill Museum, the Gateway Area Foundation, Camanche School District and the Clinton Jaycees.
