SUN CITY, Calif. — Lois McDonnell Ganna, 84, former Clinton resident, longtime civil servant and devoted aunt, died February 23, 2009, in Sun City, Calif. Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 28, 2009, at the new Prince of Peace Church in Clinton, Iowa.

Born in Charlotte, Iowa, to William O. and Genevieve (O’Toole) McDonnell July 29, 1924, Mrs. Ganna grew up on the family farm near Charlotte. She graduated from Mount St. Clare Academy.

Her secretarial and bookkeeping work at Schick General Hospital during World War II provided the springboard to a civil service career in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Ganna worked in the Pentagon before moving to the Department of Interior, where she met the love of her life, Mr. Angelo Ganna. They were married in 1968 in St. Mary's Church, Clinton. She retired in 1973 as an executive assistant in the Department of Interior in the Office of the Secretary.

Mrs. Ganna is preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings, Father Francis McDonnell, Donal McDonnell, Thomas (Pinky) McDonnell, Charles (Chuck) McDonnell, Teresa Pranger, John Richard (Dick) McDonnell and Leon McDonnell. Survivors include her sister, Mary Joan Place, Sun City, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Roberta McDonnell, Donna

McDonnell, Shirlee McDonnell and Sharon Ketelsen, all of Clinton; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and her best friend of more than 60 years, Fannie Britto, Wilmington, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Thomas “Pinky” McDonnell Scholarship (in care of Prince of Peace Schools, Clinton) or Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton. Evan Brown Mortuary, Sun City, CA is handling the arrangements.
