DEWITT — Melvin H. Peahl, 78, DeWitt, died Tuesday morning, March 10, 2009, at Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa.

Friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2009, in Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Timothy J. Carr will officiate with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Military rites by Eugene McManus American Legion Post 238 will be conducted at graveside. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Jackson County or Grace Lutheran GYM Building project.

Melvin Henry Peahl was born July 16, 1930, in Grand Mound, to John and Hulda (Burmeister) Peahl. On June 9, 1957, he married Joyce Stier at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. He served in the Army in the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1955. He worked at numerous jobs in his lifetime, including the DeWitt Farm Store, Nichols Aluminum, Stopler Industries. Mel’s last place of employment was the Central Community School District as a custodian at both the Junior High and Ekstrand Elementary.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, where he served as a trustee for several terms. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and his yard. Mel had a deep love for his family, especially his two granddaughters.

Surviving are his loving wife of 51 years, Joyce; a son, Douglas of DeWitt, a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Dean Bousselot of Dixon, Iowa; and two granddaughters, Jessica and Angela Bousselot.

Preceding Mel in death were his parents; a brother, Leroy; and his twin brother, Marvin.
