A 3-year-old girl who wandered out of her home late this morning was found at an elementary school about a mile away after a tense hour-long search.
Capt. Mike Gertson of the Clinton Police Department said a 911 call came in around 11:19 a.m. that Kallie Simpson had disappeared from her home at 222 Fifth Ave. North.
“She evidently walked out of the residence when her mother was getting a bottle for another child,” said Gertson.
Every available police and fire unit was deployed for a search in the girl’s neighborhood until around 12:30 p.m., when staff at Jefferson Elementary School reported they had found her. Gertson couldn’t say for sure how she got to the school.
Gertson said officers and firefighters knocked on doors and walked streets and alleys until the girl was confirmed found.
“It’s too bad it didn’t happen sooner, because I imagine the parent went through a lot of anguish over it,” Gertson said. “We didn’t think she was abducted, and I thought, ‘Well, how can somebody not notice a little 3-year-old wandering around?’”
