CLINTON — According to a police report issued Wednesday morning, a sleepy semi driver struck and damaged three parked vehicles at 1:31 a.m. Friday on North Second Street near Seventh Avenue North.

Freddie D. Smith, 48, of Cedar Rapids, was driving a 2006 Bobtail semi tractor early Friday morning and fell asleep at the wheel while driving down Second Street. Smith struck a parked 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, which spun off the shoulder into a neighboring yard. The semi then rear-ended a parked 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass, which in turn rear-ended another parked vehicle, a 1998 Ford Contour.

The three other vehicles were unoccupied and legally parked and no injuries were reported. According to a representative of the Clinton Police Department, Smith was not charged in the accident because Iowa code does not provide for issuing citations for striking parked cars if the driver has insurance and a valid driver’s license and fulfills their obligation to stop following the accident and files a report with the police department.

The semi sustained $3,000 damage. Damage to the Cobalt is estimated at $12,000. The Cutlass sustained $4,000 damage and damage to the Contour is estimated at $2,000.
