CLINTON — The Clinton City Council on Tuesday approved lease agreements with Clinton Riverboat Days Inc. and the Clinton Jaycees for festivities during the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration.

Clinton Riverboat Days will be June 30 to July 4 with activities and entertainment scheduled in Riverview Park. The Jaycees Carnival will take place in the south part of the Alliant Energy Field parking lot beginning June 29.

City Attorney Matt Brisch said the agreements are similar to last year’s, but rules had to be developed for the carnival setup due to Vision Iowa-funded improvements at the stadium. He said surfacing improvements needed to be protected so there are some stipulations as to where carnival rides, entrances and exits are set up.

The council also adopted a resolution approving the liquor license, Sunday sales and outdoor sales privileges for Clinton Riverboat Days Inc. and the issuance of a Class II letter of exemption.

Ward 1 Councilman Bob Soesbe said he is concerned about the alcohol sales that take place during Riverboat Days, but acknowledged Riverboat Days organizers set tight rules.

“I hope they will enforce them to make sure underage kids aren’t drinking beer,” he said. “I hope they really police this like they say they’re gonna.”
