MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. — A Rockford, Ill, man is dead and his alleged killer is being held in the Carroll County Jail on $2 million bond after he was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

David W. Klein, 21, of Savanna, Ill., is accused of fatally stabbing Jacob S. Morhardt, 21, around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to court documents on file at the Carroll County Circuit Clerk’s Office, Morhardt was stabbed in the chest with a knife in the hallway at 3091⁄2 Main St. He was transported to Mercy North Hospital in Clinton by Savanna Ambulance, then airlifted to Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, in Davenport, where he died a few hours later.

Documents state that witnesses told Savanna police, who arrived as Savanna ambulance personnel were tending to Morhardt’s wound, that they saw Klein stab Morhardt a few moments earlier.

The documents state that Klein’s wallet was found at the scene of the stabbing, and that his driver’s license was inside. A bloody knife was recovered in the alley outside of the hallway.

Klein was arrested shortly after and is being held in the Carroll County Jail. He has been charged with two murder counts — one that accuses him of committing an act with the intent to kill or injure and the other for committing an act that had the strong probability of killing or causing injury.

His preliminary hearing has been set for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 2.

Assisting the Savanna Police in the investigation are the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and the Thomson Police Department.
