CLINTON — Thirteenth Avenue North between North Second Street and Pershing Boulevard will be closed today through Wednesday due to work on a sewer separation project in the north end of Clinton.

City officials said 13th Avenue North is expected to be open for traffic by Thursday morning.

Eastbound traffic on 13th Avenue North will be redirected north on North Third Street to 15th Avenue North, where traffic will be reconnected with North Second Street. Westbound traffic will be detoured to 11th Avenue North, where traffic can connect with North Third Street to 13th Avenue North.

The sewer separation is designed to alleviate heavy flows in the current combined sewer line. A combined sewer line conveys wastewater and stormwater during rain events or snow melts. Heavy rain events can cause the city main to surcharge, which can then cause backups in the system that could be forced up floor drains in residents' homes.

The stormwater can be eliminated from this current combined sewer line by providing a separate sewer for only stormwater.
