AU records first victory

DAVENPORT – Looking for its first win of the 2014 season, the Ashford University softball team headed indoors Saturday for Day 1 of the St. Ambrose Softball in the Snow Tournament, held at the Ambrose Dome.

After a tough 5-4 loss to the host Queen Bees in the morning session, the Saints rebounded in the afternoon with a 6-1 win over Benedictine University-Springfield (Ill.) for their first victory of the season.

The Ashford offense pounded out a total of 14 hits, with three from junior catcher Shelby Hobelman leading the team. Senior pitcher Kendra Roth tossed a complete-game gem in Game 2 as AU moved to 1-4 on the year.

Nicole Schmidt (0-3) took the loss, surrendering seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

The Saints wasted little time getting the upper hand in Game 2, against Benedictine Springfield, as Britnee Dobbs’ bases-loaded single brought home one run in the top of the first. Two innings later, Siera Spahiu took advantage of a misplayed ball to score on Katelyn Hair’s single to make it 2-0.

The Saints put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning. Kalyn Ohlemeyer struck first with a run-scoring single before Taylor Ellestad belted a two-run double to deep center field for her first career hit and RBIs.

Roth (1-1) scattered five hits while giving up two walks and fanning five for her first win of the year.
