Ashford splits doubleheader in Tuscon

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Ashford University softball team ditched the cold weather and headed west for spring break, opening play at the 2014 Tucson Invitational on Sunday.

Ashford 2, Siena Heights 1

Sophomore Nicole Schmidt was dialed in from the first pitch, tossing four innings of perfect ball from the circle. She got a little support from her offense in the bottom of the third when senior Nicole Interrante picked up an RBI by drawing a bases loaded walk. It was all the Saints (2-7) would get as Hobelman flied out to left to end the inning one batter later.

Two innings later, junior Payton Getting singled to start the inning, stole second and third, and came in to score on Ohlemeyer’s RBI single to left field.

Schmidt (1-4) punched out seven hitters and walked three in 6 1/3 innings, allowing only one hit and an unearned run. Senior Kendra Roth got the final two outs.

Great Falls 9, Ashford 7

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Ashford plated their first run of the game on a bases loaded single from junior Bitto. But the Saints stranded the bases loaded when Briana De La Rosa lined out to end the inning.

One inning later, the Saints took their first lead of the ball game thanks to Spahiu’s two-run single and another run-scoring single off the bat of Bitto to make it 4-3 Saints.

Great Falls took the lead back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth but Hobelman brought the Saints back to even with a towering home run to lead off the bottom of the inning, tying the game at five.

But two runs for the Argos in both the sixth and seventh innings proved to be too much to come back from.

Roth (1-3) was tagged for seven earned runs in six innings, walking three and striking out one.
