Saints post win, tie

JACKSON, Miss. — Ashford returned to the baseball diamond Tuesday and earned a win and a tie against Tougaloo College.

The Saints’ offense struck early and often in the opener en route to a 9-6 win in Game 1. The second game went to extra innings before being called because of darkness with the score tied 5-5 in the ninth inning. Ashford improved its record to 4-3-1 on the year.

Tanner Courtney went 1-for-2 in the opener, drawing three walks and scoring twice. Manny Colon led the team with two RBIs. Senior pitcher Steven Sotiropoulos (2-0) of Belleville, Ill., gave up six runs on five hits in six innings, striking out a career-high eight batters.

After building a 5-1 lead in Game 2, the Bulldogs battled back to even the game in the fifth inning, chasing starter Kevin Delzell. Eric Musselman scattered four hits and struck out seven over the final 4 1/3 innings.

Tyler Davis drove in two runs to lead the Saints, while Lucas Pattison had two hits and one RBI.

Next up for the Saints is a trip to Alexandria, La., on Thursday, where Ashford will battle Louisiana State University Alexandria in doubleheader set to begin at 4 p.m.
