Vikings silence Saints at Winter Classic

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – In their final game before the Christmas break, the 23rd-ranked Ashford University men's basketball team faced off against the Vikings of Grand View University in the final game of the 2013 JustAgame Winter Classic.

East Moline, Ill.-native Damon Overton finished with a game-high 27 points, but a second half run by the Vikings proved to be the difference as AU fell to 11-5 on the year with a 64-57 loss.

The Saints struggled from the floor out of the gate, connecting on only one field goal in the game's opening seven minutes. But the offense found their legs as the half went on and with seven minutes left in the first half, the Saints had their first lead of the game after a Tevin Harris jumper.

Ashford would ride that momentum into the break, taking a 29-25 lead at the halftime horn.

But the AU offense dried up in the second half while the Vikings came out red hot, outscoring the Saints 17-4 to take a 42-33 lead with 10 minutes to play.

AU would cut the lead down to five, but couldn't rally before the final horn sounded.

Adebayo Babalola led the Vikings with 21 points while John Peters chipped in with 18 of his own as Grand View improved to 10-4 on the year.

The Saints connected on 39.6% (21-for-53) of their shot attempts on Wednesday while holding GVU to 38.9% (21-for-54) shooting. One day after burying nine three-pointers, Ashford struggled from long distance against the Vikings, connecting on 18.2% (2-for-11) of their tries.

AU will have 12 days off before their next contest, which takes place on Monday, Dec. 30, against #13 Huntington University (Iowa). Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
