---- — CHICAGO – In the final game of the 2013 St. Xavier Holiday Classic, the Ashford University women’s basketball team trimmed a 19-point halftime deficit to single digits against Robert Morris, but ran out of time in a 75-67 loss, the third in a row for the Saints.
For the second day in a row, Lancaster, Wis.-native Madison Wagner topped the Saints with 20 points while freshman Sarah Vozel collected her second career double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds, but the Saints suffered their third loss in a row to drop to 6-12 on the year.
After the game, Wagner was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Eagles took control of the game from the opening tip, knocking down 44.1% (15-for-34) of their shots while forcing 13 Ashford turnovers to take a 41-22 lead at halftime.
Ashford would start to chip away at the lead at the start of the second half, knocking the lead down to single digits with 4:49 left in the game after a Wagner free throw. AU would cut the deficit to as little as five, but the Eagles closed out the game from the free throw line.
Tikeyiah Johnson led Robert Morris with 22 points, one of five Eagles to reach double-figures on Sunday, as they improved to 7-5 on the year.
Ashford connected on 38.8% (26-for-67) of their shots on the afternoon while the Eagles knocked down 41.3% (26-for-63) of their tries. The Saints dominated the battle on the glass, pulling down 50 rebounds while surrendering 35.
The Saints return to Kehl Arena for their next game on Jan. 7, when they welcome the Trojans of Trinity International (Ill.) to Clinton for the first of back-to-back meetings.
