College basketball: Grace upsets Saints on road

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – In the fifth game of an eight-game road trip, the 23rd-ranked Ashford University men’s basketball team ended 2013 on a sour note Tuesday afternoon.

Three Saints reached double figures, led by 18 points from East Moline, Ill., native Damon Overton, but the Saints suffered a 67-59 upset loss to Grace College.

Juniors DeAndre Lowery and Tevin Harris finished with 17 and 13 points, respectively, for the Saints (12-6), who shot 43.1% (22-for-51) from the floor.

Jared Treadway led the Lancers (7-6) with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Grace knocked down 41.4% (24 of 58) of its shots.

The first half featured six ties and six lead changes and was all square at 29 with 4:36 to go before the halftime horn. But an 8-2 run to close the half by the Lancers gave them a lead they would not lose.

Ashford stayed within striking distance throughout the final 20 minutes but got only as close as four points before the clock hit all zeroes.

Grace held a 32-29 advantage on the glass and forced10 Ashford turnovers while committing only three.

The Saints open the 2014 portion of their schedule on Saturday, when they head to Joliet, Ill. for a 7 p.m. meeting with the University of St. Francis. The two squads met Nov. 5 in the season opener in Clinton, a game the Saints won 72-68.
