Lowery powers Ashford

JOLIET, Ill. – Playing less than an hour from his hometown of Calumet City, Ill., Ashford junior guard DeAndre Lowery set a season high with 24 points Saturday night and was one of four Saints to reach double digits in an 82-70 comeback win over the University of St. Francis.

Junior Anthony Woods (19 points), senior Thaddeus Perry (13) and sophomore Damon Overton (10) also reached double digits as the 23rd-ranked Saints erased an eight-point second-half deficit by knocking down 17 of 27 shots (63 percent) in the final stanza to improve to 13-6.

Mark Peters led the Fighting Saints with 20 points. USF dropped to 5-9 despite connecting on 24 of 40 field goal attempts (60 percent).

The opening frame featured seven ties and seven lead changes. It was 24-24 with 5:36 left before the halftime horn, but St. Francis outscored AU 16-10 the rest of the half. The Fighting Saints knocked down 15 of 22 shots in building the 40-34 halftime lead..

Ashford caught fire from the second half’s opening whistle.

AU controlled the game on the glass, grabbing 33 rebounds while surrendering a season-low 22. The Saints also came out on top in the turnover battle, forcing 14 while coughing up the ball only nine times.

Next up for the Saints is a trip to Gary, Ind., for a meeting at 5 p.m. Saturday with Indiana University Northwest.
