Ashford squads return to their winning ways

ST. LOUIS – The Ashford University tennis teams each got back in the win column Saturday afternoon, downing Missouri Baptist.

The AU women snapped a three-meet slide and improved to 4-3 in the spring with a 9-0 blanking. Meanwhile, the Ashford men ended a two-meet losing streak and moved to 4-2 with a 6-3 victory.

On the women’s side, Ursula Alvarado and Ana Mayagoitia started things off with an 8-4 win in No. 1 doubles play. The teams of Camanche’s Jalyn Deering and Adriana Obando, and Gloria Mayorga and Sara Vach each picked up 8-3 wins to round out doubles action.

Ashford completed the sweep in singles play, dropping only 23 points in a dominant performance.

When the action shifted over to the men’s side, the Saints won a pair of doubles matches. Brothers Carlos and Gian Pico earned an 8-6 win as the No. 2 tandem, while Bart Van Rooijen and Lucas Benites picked up an 8-3 victory from the third spot.

Gian Pico finished an unbeaten day with a 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 singles action. Van Rooijen, Brayton Rasche of Camanche and Erich Taach closed out the win for AU, winning their matches in the Nos. 4-6 singles spots.

Next up for the Ashford men is a dual match against Cornell on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The women will take on Robert Morris University (Ill.) on at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Both matches will take place at the Ashford University Indoor Tennis Center in Clinton.
