AU women 2nd, men take 3rd

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Ashford women’s and men’s golf teams turned in their most impressive outings of the spring Friday and Saturday, with each finishing in the top three at the Graceland Spring Invitational at Mozingo Lakes Golf Course.

Led by Courtney Gieseman’s third-place individual finish, the Ashford women secured a second-place finish with a team score of 698 (347-342). Sitting in fourth place after Day 1, the Ashford men jumped on day two to finish third with a score of 621 (314-307).

The lone senior on the women’s side, Gieseman fired consecutive 83s and finished with a 166 to finish six strokes back of the top spot, recording her highest finish of the year. Demi Corteze of William Penn fired a 77-83--160 to earn medalist honors.

Freshman Stephanie Stair tied for 11th place with an 83-90--173. Her twin sister Laura recorded a 91-83--174 to finish one shot back in a tie for 13th place. Junior Katelyn Gille carded a 90-86--176 for 15th place, and sophomore Katie Thompson came in in 41st with a 99-94--193.

William Penn University took the top spot with a 667 (338-329) to finish 22 strokes ahead of the Saints.

For the second straight week, freshman Matt Chiasson paced the Ashford men. The Cambridge, Ontario, native carded a 6-over-par 150 (74-76) and sat alone in second place at tournament’s end. It was the second consecutive runner-up finish for Chiasson.

Junior Ryan Hilton and freshman Sergio Garcia earned spots in the top 10, firing identical scores of 79-77--156 to tie for 10th place. Freshman Pedro Velasco tied for 22nd place with an 83-77--160, while fellow freshman Ben Thornton fired an 82-85--167 to tie for 35th.

Baker University (Kan.) fired a 613 (304-309) to edge AIB School of Business by one shot for the tournament championship. The Wildcats’ Alex Zuzelski earned medalist honors with a 147 (72-75), besting Chiasson by three shots.

Both Ashford teams will be back in action this Friday and Saturday, when they head to Riverside for the Blue Top Ridge Invitational at Blue Top Ridge Resort.
