---- — BELLEVUE, Neb. – Ashford concluded play in the Bruin/Premier Classic volleyball tournament, hosted by Bellevue University (Neb.), on Saturday morning and lost to its second rated opponent in as many days.
With the loss, Ashford falls to 13-9 on the season while Hastings improves to 15-7.
With their backs up against the wall, the Saints (13-9) started the third set on fire, jumping to a 7-2 lead. Trailing 18-9, the Broncos (15-7) mounted a furious charge to pull within one at 19-18, forcing the Saints into a timeout.
AU responded out of the break, holding off the Broncos for the win to force a fourth set.
But the Saints were unable force a deciding set, as Hasting took eight of the game’s final 10 points for the 25-17 win.
Kristen Kotch led the Saints with 10 kills, while junior Danielle Tombolato added eight. Hastings had a 63-42 edge in kills and dug up 78 shots to the Saints’ 70.
Freshman Vernice Chaparro led the Saints in assists, dishing out 18.
The Saints will look to bounce back at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when they return home for a meeting with St. Ambrose University.
