AU women 2nd, men 3rd in meet

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In its final event of the fall season, the Ashford women’s golf team fired a two-day score of 675 (328-347) to record its second runner-up finish of the fall season over the weekend at the Dan Salisbury Memorial Collegiate Invitational

The AU men carded a 618 (303-315) to finish in third place.

Leading the AU women was freshman Laura Stair, who carded 164 (81-83) to finish in third place and earn a spot on the event’s all-tournament team. Just a few shots back was twin sister Stephanie Stair, whose 169 (80-89) earned her a tie for seventh place.

Just missing the top 10 was senior Courtney Gieseman (81-89—170) in a tie for 11th place. Junior Katelyn Gille tied for 15th place with a 174 (86-88).

Rounding out the Ashford scoring was sophomore Katie Thompson with a 178 (91-87).

The host Prairie Stars of Illinois-Springfield took the top spot, besting the Saints by 27 shots with a 648 (323-325). Rebecca Ramirez of UIS earned medalist honors with an 81-75—156 to win by one shot.

Topping the scorecard for the Ashford men was freshman Pedro Velasco (75-76—151) for a tie for sixth place. Fellow freshman Matt Chiasson finished 11th overall with a 74-79—153.

Junior Jonathan LaRue (77-78—155) tied for 18th, freshman Sergio Garcia tied for 43rd (77-86—163) and junior Ryan Hilton (82-82—164) tied for 46th place.

William Jewell College (Kan.) took home the team championship, shooting a 614 (304-310) to edge Quincy University (Ill.) by two shots. Spalding University’s (Ky.) Hunt Lenz topped the leaderboard with a 70-75—145 to win by three shots.

Next up for the Ashford men is a trip to TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., for the NAIA Midwest Invitational on Oct. 14-15.
