Ashford's LaRue is meet medalist

RIVERSIDE – Ashford junior Jonathan LaRue made his return to the lineup in a big way for the Ashford University men’s golf team Saturday and Sunday at the Blue Top Ridge Invitational.

Not only did the junior help his team to a third-place finish with a 590, the Grand Rapids, Mich., native bested Mount Mercy’s Ryan Shrimper in a playoff to collect his first career medalist honor with a 2-under-par 142 (71-71).

LaRue became the first Saint to earn medalist honors since Chien Hau Tan was victorious at the Graceland Invitational on March 30, 2013.

Junior Ryan Hilton (73-76) and freshman Pedro Velasco (74-75) earned a share for 10th, carding a pair of 149s. One shot back of the duo was freshman Matt Chiasson, who earned a 12th-place finish with a 150 (74-76). Sergio Garcia’s 156 (80-76) rounded out the Ashford top five.

Mount Mercy took the team championship with a 581 to earn a 6-shot win over second-place AIB.

The Ashford women also turned in a solid showing, picking up a third-place finish with a score of 695. Leading the way for the Saints was freshman Laura Stair’s 168 (83-85). Right on her heels was senior Courtney Gieseman (89-83), who carded a 172 for the event.

Junior Katelyn Gille shot a 177 (85-92), freshman Stephanie Stair carded a 179 (89-90) and Taylor Stewart fired a 181 (88-93) to round out the top five for the Saints. Playing as an individual, Katie Thompson fired a 187 (96-91).

William Penn University took the team title with a 648 to earn a 10-shot win over second-place Grand View. The Vikings’ Kenzie Rottinghaus earned medalist honors in a playoff, shooting a 156 (80-76).

Both teams will tee it up next on Friday and Saturday at the Bethel Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
