Trolls top Ashford

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Ashford University continued their nine-game road trip on Wednesday afternoon, as they looked to continue their recent two-game winning streak against the Trolls of Trinity Christian College.

But the short winning streak came to an end as the Trolls jumped on Ashford pitching in the opener, downing the Saints, 9-2. Leading in the final inning in game two, the Trolls spoiled the Saints’ bid for a split, scoring twice in the final inning to earn a 3-2 win.

Junior Tanner Courtney drove in two of the Ashford’s four runs on the day and a quartet of Saints recorded a pair of hits on the day. With the losses, Ashford drops to 10-18-1 on the year.

Game One: Trinity Christian 9 – Ashford 2

Ashford grabbed the lead in the top of the second inning when Mount Pleasant, Iowa-native Courtney stepped to the dish with the bases loaded and roped a single to make it 2-1 Ashford. It gives Courtney 13 RBI on the year, tying him for the team lead.

The Trolls would even up the game in the bottom of the second and take the lead for good in the third with another tally. Ashford missed a golden opportunity in the fourth, stranding the bases loaded. Trinity Christian would make the Saints pay in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice before adding four more in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Kevin Delzell dropped to 2-2 on the year after allowing five runs on seven hits in four innings of work.

Game Two: Trinity Christian 3 – Ashford 2

Ashford looked to pounce early in the second contest, but they were denied twice on plays at the plate in the top of the second. The Trolls would snatch the lead one inning later to open the scoring on an RBI groundout.

The Saints would break through in the top of the fifth inning, taking their first lead of the ball game on a pair of run-scoring doubles from Cam Bortell and R.J. Roberts to make it 2-1, a lead that would hold until the final inning.
