Errors prove costly for Ashford

MORRISON, Ill. – Ashford was generous on defense Saturday, committing 12 errors and losing twice at the Ashford University Spring Jamboree in college softball.

Ashford’s comeback bid came up just short in a 5-4 loss to Judson (Ill.). In the afternoon game, the Saints fell behind early in an 8-1 loss to Trinity Christian (Ill.).

Juniors Payton Geeting and Alex Bitto finished with three hits each, but the Saints’ offense was unable to overcome the defensive miscues, dropping to 18-17 at the end of the day.

The Eagles opened the first game with a three-run first inning, thanks to a two-run double from Nicky Chupa, who scored later in the inning on an error. Ashford cut the lead to 3-2 in its first trip to the plate when Kalyn Ohlemeyer and Bitto scored on a Judson error.

Judson added runs in the third and fourth innings to stretch the lead back to three , but the Saints cut the lead down to a single run in the fourth on RBIs from Natalia Reynoso and Britnee Dobbs. But the Saints couldn’t get the equalizer, stranding the bases loaded to end the inning.

Kendra Roth (8-9) gave up two earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in a complete game effort for Ashford.

The Saints fell behind early again in their second game.

A pair of Ashford errors led to both Troll runs in the top of the first inning. Down 3-0 in the third, the Saints cut the lead to two when Bitto sent a ball down the left-field line for a double, scoring Geeting from first base.

It was as close as the Saints got as the Trolls plated five unearned runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three Ashford errors.

Nicole Schmidt (10-8) took the loss for Ashford, giving up two earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in a complete game.
