Ashford 4th in opener

---- — SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Ashford University men’s golf team opened the fall portion of the season by placing fourth Friday and Saturday at the Battle at Blackthorn, hosted by Bethel (Ind.).

The Saints finished with a 308-305--613 team total at the Blackthorn Golf Club.

Leading the way for the Saints were a pair of returners, juniors Ryan Hilton and Jonathan LaRue, who both carded two-day totals of 7-over-par 151s o finish in a three-way tie for sixth place. Both fired identical rounds of 76 on Friday and 75 on Saturday.

Argentina native Pedro Velasco tied for 14th with a 154, while Canadian newcomer Matt Chiasson shot a 157 to tie for 24th. Landon Osborne rounded out the scoring with a 158 to tie for 30th.

The Saints finished in a fourth place tie with Marian (Ind.) as

Host Bethel (Ind.) won the event by one stroke over Cardinal Stritch (Wis.), with Holy Cross (Ind.) taking third. CSU’s Justin Doeden won medalist honors with a 71-72--143, winning the tournament by two shots.

Ashford is in Polk City today and Tuesday for the Grand View Fall Invitational at the Tournament Club of Iowa.
