Volleyball: Saints drop 2 in tournament

DES MOINES – Ashford's volleyball team lost twice Friday at the Grand View Tournament, facing off against 10th-ranked Park University (Mo.) and Evangel University (Mo.).

After dropping the day's opening set to Park, Ashford (15-14) evened up the match up with a 25-14 win in the second set, thanks to 11 kills from the AU offense.

Despite dropping the third set, 25-16, the Saints offense came out firing in the fourth set, hammering home 13 kills while committing only three errors. However, it wasn't enough, as the Pirates took game four, 25-21, to close out the match and improve to 24-2 this year.

Freshman Victoria Day paced the Ashford offense with 11 kills, while Pakalana Helekahi and Micah Wedemeier added nine and eight, respectively. Junior Danielle Tombolato accounted for 10.5 points in the game, adding seven kills to go along with a team-high 3.5 blocks.

In the nightcap, the Saints dropped the first two sets to Evangel, 25-21 and 25-13, respectively. Ashford stayed alive in the third set, putting down 13 kills and recording a .258 hitting percentage en route to a 25-16 win.

The Saints looked to stay alive in the fourth set but fell just short as the Crusaders improved to 13-11 with a 25-23 win.

Helekahi led the Saints offensive attack in, putting down 13 of the team's 43 kills. Junior Samantha Schultz dug up 30 balls for the Saints, while sophomore Danielle Rzewnicki dished out 20 assists to lead the team.

The Saints close out the event today against Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and William Woods (Mo.).
