Saints top ranked foe, 1-0

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The seventh-ranked Ashford University men’s soccer team hit the road Saturday (Oct. 19), and senior Lucas Almeida scored the game’s lone goal to beat No. 15 Columbia College (Mo.) 1-0.

The win was Ashford’s fourth over a nationally-ranked team.

Almeida wasted little time in putting the Saints (10-3-1) on top, launching a shot that went off the crossbar and past Cougars goalkeeper Matt McKenna in the ninth minute for his ninth tally of the season. The goal proved to be the Saints’ lone shot on goal for the game.

The Cougars (9-4-3) pressed for the equalizer in the first half, but Ashford goalkeeper Patrick Kinsella held his ground, stopping four shots in the opening half. He finished with five saves for his second shutout of the season.

The second half was a defensive battle, as the two teams combined for only six total shots. Columbia had the final quality chance of the game, but a shot from Akihl Noel missed high with more than seven minutes to play.

The home team held a 10-5 advantage in total shots, with AU’s Daniel Dreier leading all attackers with four attempts.

Ashford held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks, while Columbia committed six of the game’s 11 fouls.

The Saints return to Clinton for their final home date of the season Tuesday, when they host Mount Mercy University in a 7 p.m. Senior Day game.
