Saints win 2 at tourney

DES MOINES – After suffering a pair of losses Friday at the Grand View Tournament, the Ashford volleyball team bounced back in a big way, earning a weekend split with a four-set win over Olivet Nazarene on Saturday morning and a five-set triumph over William Woods (Mo.) in the afternoon.

In the morning session, the Saints (17-14) brushed aside the Tigers (15-15) 25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22.

Junior Kristen Kotch put down 16 of the Saints’ 50 kills, recording a .609 hitting percentage. Danielle Tombolato added 12 kills and paced the AU defense with 4.5 blocks.

The Saints struggled out of the gate against William Woods (12-18), dropping the first two sets, 25-21 and 28-26, respectively. Ashford gained momentum after a 25-21 win in the third set before cruising to a 25-12 win in Game 4.

Ashford completed the comeback with a 15-7 win in the fifth game.

Four Saints reached double digits in kills, let by senior Micah Wedemeier’s 16. Tombolato (15), freshman Pakalana Helekahi (13) and Kotch (10) also helped the Saints finish with 66 kills.

Sophomore Danielle Rzewnicki handed out 33 assists, while junior Samantha Schultz topped the team with 23 digs.

The Saints return home Tuesday, when they welcome Mount Mercy University for a 6 p.m. “Dig Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
