---- — CLINTON – The Ashford University volleyball team extended its winning streak to three matches Tuesday night when it downed Mount Mercy in straight sets on “Dig Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Kehl Arena.

After holding on for a 25-21 win in the first set, the Saints cruised to a pair of 25-14 wins in the second and third sets to improve to 18-14 on the season. The Mustangs fall to 7-20.

“We played pretty well,” Ashford coach Micah Cewe said. “The first set they pushed us, but in the second set, we kicked in and turned it up a gear.

“We had a couple of nice early starts in sets two and three. It’s always nice when you get points early.”

The Saints needed only 40 kills to sweep the visitors, recording a .267 hitting percentage while adding 10 blocks and five service aces.

Freshman Pakalana Helekahi led the Saints with 11 kills on 19 attempts, while Danielle Tombolato, Kristen Kotch and Victoria Day chipped in with seven kills each. Sophomore Danielle Rzewnicki led the Saints with 15 assists, while Sam Schultz topped the team with 12 digs.

On defense, Kotch topped all Saints with three blocks, while Wedemeier chipped in with 2.5 of her own.

The Saints return to action Saturday, when they welcome Indiana Tech and 19th-ranked Grand View to Kehl Arena for matches at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
