College volleyball: Saints finish regular season with victory

DUBUQUE – In its final tune-up before postseason play, the Ashford University volleyball team slipped past the Crusaders of Clarke University with a five-set win Friday.
The Saints won 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 19-25, 17-15.
Senior Micah Wedemeier led the Saints with a game-high 17 kills as AU held off a furious Clarke rally to close the regular season with a 21-15 record.
Junior Kristen Kotch (15 kills), freshman Pakalana Helekahi (13 kills) and Victoria Day (10 kills) also reached double digits in kills. Sophomore Danielle Rzewnicki led all setters with 30 assists on the night.
The Saints trailed for much of the first set before knotting things up at 18 late in the game. AU used that momentum to take seven of the final 11 points to seize the lead. Ashford rode that wave to a 25-18 win in the second set and take a 2-0 stranglehold on the game.
But the Crusaders battled back with wins in the third and fourth sets to force a fifth and deciding game. In the final game, the Saints never trailed but held off one last Clarke rally for a 17-15 win.
Samantha Schultz led the Saints with 23 digs on the night.
Emily Wineinger finished with 16 kills for the Crusaders, who dropped to 29-7 on the year.
The Saints turn their attention to the 2013 Association of Independent Institutions Tournament, held Nov. 15 and 16 in Clinton. The Saints open pool play against Johnson & Wales (Colo.) at 9 a.m. before facing Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) at 1 p.m.
