LA CROSSE, Wis. – After watching the rain much of the day, the Ashford University baseball team returned to Iowa with a victory Thursday.
The Saints (13-25-1) waited out a three-hour rain delay, then struck quickly once they got on the diamond. They used a three-run first inning to set the tone on their way to a 6-0 win in five innings against host Viterbo (25-16). Game 2 was called off because of darkness.
Junior Larry Herron drove in a pair of runs and Tomas Chardon and Tyler Davis each had a pair of hits to lead the Ashford offense. Three pitchers combined for the shutout.
Ashford opened the scoring with three consecutive RBI singles from Manny Acevedo, Davis and R.J. Roberts in the top of the first. John Caravia had a RBI single and Herron a pair of run-scoring groundouts for the Saints.
Starter Kevin Delzell surrendered two hits and struck out four in four innings to improve to 4-2 on the year. Seniors Eric Musselman and Ian Hamilton combined to work a scoreless fifth, giving the Saints their third shutout of the year.
The season comes to an end today with a pair of games at Grand View University.
