Ashford students to help at race

CLINTON — As the third annual Clinton Half Marathon approaches, the Ashford University athletics department will again provide support from the sidelines.

As in previous renditions of the event, racers on all three courses, the 5K, 10K, and half-marathon distances, will be greeted at the water stations by Ashford University student-athletes.

“One of the five NAIA core values is servant leadership and we feel like this event is a great fit for us. We believe it is our responsibility to serve others, and our student-athletes really appreciate the time and energy the runners put into training. We take pride in supporting their commitment and everyone enjoys cheering on the participants,” Ashford University Director of Athletics Meg Schebler said.

In addition to their duties providing the support at the water stations, student-athletes assist in other ways as well. An early morning shift helps set up the tables and supplies for the stops, while others help provide traffic control throughout the course. Another group will assist at the finish line.

Approximately 250 team members, coaches and administrative staff from the athletics department participate in helping at the run.

“The entire athletics department has embraced this opportunity to contribute and our group really enjoys being a part of it,” Schebler said. “I love hearing runners after the race comment on the energy and enthusiasm our student-athletes provide throughout the course. It’s fun to know that in some small way we are helping them achieve their goals.”

The Clinton Half Marathon will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 a.m. at Ashford University Field. The event offers the choice of a half marathon, 10K, or 5K run/walk. All three races will begin just outside of Ashford University Field.

Proceeds from the Clinton Half Marathon will be donated to help support the YWCA. Registration is available on the Clinton Half Marathon website at www.clintonhalfmarathon.com.
