Saints use second half to get win

JOLIET, Ill. — Thanks to a 10-0 second half run, the Ashford University women's basketball extended its winning streak to three games on Saturday night with a 65-58 win over the University of St. Francis (Ill.).

Junior Quinn Rear netted a game-high 19 points while Elizabeth Nardi and Jessica Mlachnik added 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Saints, who improved to 4-5 on the year.

Katie Gonnering had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Fighting Saints, who fell to 3-5 on the season.

The opening half featured seven ties and six lead changes. Rear netted 13 of her points but the Saints headed into the break trailing, 35-31.

Ashford picked up the pressure on defense in the second half, holding the Fighting Saints to a slim 22.6% (7-for-31) from the floor in the second frame.

With the score tied at 43 with 12:54 to play, Ashford began their game-changing run by knocking down eight consecutive free throws. The lead stretched to 10 with 6:41 to play when Nardi knocked down a layup, giving the Saints the cushion they would need to earn the win.

The Saints knocked down 42.9% (21-for-49) of their shots on the night while holding the hosts to 29.7% (19-for-64) shooting. Led by senior Jennifer Forge's nine rebounds, AU held a 42-35 advantage on the glass.

Next up, the Saints travel to Hammond, Ind. for a showdown with No. 21 Purdue University Calumet on Saturday, Nov. 30.
