Ashford women blank pair of foes

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Taking the pitch for a pair of contests at the Robert Morris University Chicago Invitational, the 20th-ranked Ashford women’s soccer team recorded a pair of 4-0 wins over Tennessee Wesleyan College and 15th-ranked Robert Morris University over the weekend.

Senior Hollie Babut and sophomore Alicia Tamburro each recorded two goals to lead the Saints’ attack. Senior Sarah Schreck, sophomore Danielle Boyd and freshman Hannah Scheid also scored for the Saints (3-0).

Jessica VanDyke was in net for both contests for Ashford. The senior goalkeeper stopped 15 total shots to extend the team’s shutout streak to 298 minutes, 36 seconds, dating back to last season.

Ashford needed less than two minutes to establish the lead Saturday against Tennessee Wesleyan, when the Bulldogs inadvertently put the ball into their own net.

That score held until the 34th minute, when Tamburro scored twice in a 27-second span. Boyd collected her first career goal in the 82nd minute, blasting one home from 18 yards out.

On Sunday, the Saints withstood an early flurry from the host Eagles, and their effort was rewarded in the 19th minute, when Scheid scored her first career goal.

Babut made it a 2-0 game at the 36:47 mark, then Schreck picked up a loose corner kick and scored in the final minute of the half. Babut added an insurance marker in the 56th minute, as Jordan Pisesky contributed her third assist of the match.

VanDyke turned aside 11 Robert Morris shots for her eighth career shutout. Ashford held the edge in shots, 22-19, while RMU held a 12-10 edge in shots on goal.
