Ashford volleyball wrap up

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Ashford University volleyball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon as the team wrapped up play at the Embry-Riddle Labor Day Tournament.

Ashford was swept in the first match of the day by fifth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist, but the Saints pulled out a four-set victory against Montreat College (N.C.) to close out the event.

Junior middle hitter Danielle Tombolato led the team with 23 kills, while Kristen Kotch (16), Victoria Day (11) and Morgan Martells (10) all notched double digits in kills during the pair of matches.

In the opener, Oklahoma Baptist limited the Saints (6-3) to 25 kills as the Bison swept AU 25-14, 25-21, 25-19.

But Ashford responded in the weekend finale as Tombolato pounded out 16 kills of her kills, aiding the team to the 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-13 win over Montreat. Kotch netted 12 kills in the afternoon match, while libero Samantha Schultz picked up 29 opponent shot attempts.

Freshman setter Verenice Chaparro dished out 38 assists during Saturday's action. Schultz recorded 53 digs to go along with four service aces. Chaparro led AU with six aces combined between the two matches.

The Saints return home at 7 p.m. Wednesday for a showdown against Clarke University.
