FULTON, Ill. — Kayla Anglese hit a late 3-point basket and Kelsey Munck sank two free throws in the final 10 seconds to force overtime, and then their teammates came through in overtime to help Fulton knock off Erie 42-37 in Three Rivers Conference girls basketball Tuesday night.
“This was a tough game to lose,” Erie coach Brian Howell said. “We had a lead late in the game and lost. Fulton played hard to come back and win.”
The Steamers (2-6, 1-1 in the Three Rivers) fell behind 12-2 after one quarter but pulled within 15-12 at the half. The Cardinals increased their advantage to 22-17 after three quarters but couldn’t hold on to the late five-point advantage.
Fulton coach Amanda Abbott said she was confident Munck would connect on the free throws that tied the game at 31-31, even though the Steamers finished just 17-of-38 from the free-throw line.
“We shot very poorly the first three quarters, but we made free throws when they counted,” she said. “We played better defense and knocked down short shots in overtime. We worked well all together.”
Erie (4-3, 0-2 in the conference) had its troubles shooting, too.
“The girls played hard, but it is tough to win when you shoot 13-for-46 from the field and 10-for-21 from the line,” Howell said. “Combine that with the other team getting 39 (his chart differed Fulton’s by one) free-throw attempts and it’s impossible to win. I liked our energy even with three girls fouling out for us and none for them.”
Erie’s Sydney Stewart led all scorers with 12 points. She also grabbed 11 rebounds, three fewer than teammate Katelyn Blasdell. Anglese led Fulton with 10 points.
