UPDATE: Search crews locate missing boat

CLINTON — Search crews have found the missing boat today from the boating accident Saturday that resulted in one death on the Mississippi River near the mouth of the Elk River, north of Clinton.

The driver of the boat, Charles Selser, is still missing.

The vessel has been brought to the surface and is being recovered by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Search efforts are ongoing for Selser.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted today by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency, the Iowa DNR and the Clinton County Conservation Office.

Deputies were dispatched at 11:34 a.m. Saturday for a report of a boating accident with victims in the water. The boat capsized in the Mississippi in rough water and all five occupants of the boat went into the water. The boat reportedly sank in the area.

Edwin Selser, 30, of Davenport, and his two children aged five and seven, made it to shore. Nancy Selser, 85, died in the incident.

All subjects, except for Charles, were wearing life jackets.

Lieutenant Tom Paarman said rescuers are uncertain what caused the boat to capsize, but are speculating it was weather related due to the wind and waves.

Search efforts have been delayed because of weather-related issues. The Coast Guard has been notified of the situation.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene of the initial call Saturday by Andover Fire Department, Clinton Fire Department, Camanche Fire Department, Sabula Fire Department, Savanna Fire Department, Thomson Fire Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Clinton County Conservation, Clinton County Sheriff’s Reserves K-9 Search and Rescue, Iowa DNR, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Clinton County Communications.

The initial search utilized approximately 17 boats and 50 personnel.
