Currents named grand marshals

CAMANCHE — George and Donna Current live a modest and quiet life, but that will soon change after they are highlighted as the grand marshals for the 2013 Camanche Days Parade.

"I would say that we're honored to be chosen but it's not my bag to have the light shining on us," Donna said.

George and Donna have lived in Camanche since the 1960s and have raised three children in the small, river town. Their three children all graduated from Camanche High School, and now have families of their own.

"We have three grandchildren; two that live in Clinton, and one that lives in Tipton," Donna said.

When the Currents were informed of their nomination, Donna's first instinct was to respectfully decline the offer. After much persistance from Kiwanis member John Goof, she decided to accept.

"I told her I wasn't leaving until she said yes," Goof laughed. "Even if it meant I had to sleep on the rug."

Goof credits their continued community involvement for why the Currents were selected, and feels their modesty only highlights those strong attributes.

"Over the years they have been very active and community minded so that's why they were selected," Goof said. "I told Donna to blow her horn a little but that's just not like her and George."

Some of that community involvement includes being active members of the Camanche Historical Society, active members in church and Kiwanis, Georges past involvement with the Camanche Days JayCees and Donnas work with the Memorial Day Planning Committee.

In addition to being recognized as grand marshals for the 2013 parade, George and Donna were also crowned Camanche Days King and Queen in 2012.

"We were in the parade last year as King and Queen; now we've been selected as grand marshals. People are going to run us out of town," Donna laughed.
