Turner, Nissen earn scholarships

CAMANCHE — Each the Camanche Days Board awards a scholarship to one male and one female from the current graduating class, and in turn, the winners reign over Camanche Days as Prince and Princess.

This year’s winners are Zach Nissen and Kiana Turner. They will each receive a $500 scholarship.

Turner, 18, the daughter of Chris and Kayleen Turner will attend Ashford University and plans to major in psychology and education.

During high school, she participated in volleyball, basketball and track and field.

She earned letters in five seasons. Her junior year, she was the Big East conference champion the discus, and has been a member of the Big East all-academic team.

She is a three-year member of the 3.0 club, member of Student Council, Homecoming committee, Prom committee, as well as several other clubs and activities.

In her recommendation letter, she was described as a goal-orientated achiever, always giving 100 percent, and being a positive role model.

Nissen, the son of Scott and Kimberly Nissen, will attend Simpson College and will participate in football and drama.

He plans to major in physics and mathematics, and will enter the engineering field. He plans to be an actuary.

During high school, he participated in football, track, baseball, drama, Spanish club, physics club, speech and a four-year member of 3.0 club. His awards include honor thespian, two-time Drake Relays qualifier, three-time state track qualifier, 2012 football defensive captain, first team all-district linebacker.

In his recommendation letter, he was described as highly talented in theater arts.
