34th annual Camanche Days begins

CAMANCHE — The opening ceremonies have commenced and the 2013 Camanche Days are underway.

Hundreds gathered Thursday to welcome the 34th annual Camanche Days celebration, and all the fun that comes along with it.

“I think people will be pleasantly surprised with what we have to offer this year,” Camanche Days Committee President Brenda Larkey said.

The night began with a guitar-solo performance of the National Anthem from TEEN board member Kaleb Rettkowski and an introduction of all the people that made Camanche Days a possibility.

“This is the largest (committee) we’ve had in years,” Larkey said. “I am so proud of what they have done.”

Larkey also commented on the dedication the TEEN, Together Excellence Exceeds Novice, board has shown to make Camanche Days a success this year.

During a two-day long fundraising campaign, the TEEN board raised more than $2,800 for the fireworks display, collecting money door-to-door from Camanche residents.

“The TEEN board has worked so hard this year; they deserve an extra round of applause,” Larkey said.

The TEEN board also organized a talent show Thursday, comprised of only Camanche residents 18 years and younger. Singing, dancing and musical talent highlighted the evening as the sounds of carnival excitement flooded the grounds.

Kids of all ages waited in line to try their hand at the newest carnival rides on-deck at Platt Park. As the sizzler line continued to grow, crowds gathered around the other attractions at a chance for a ride.

“We’re just waiting to go on the ferris wheel,” Camanche resident Nicole Kastel and her daughter, Avery, said.

As many waited in line for the ferris wheel and other rides, others gathered around the carnival games and the plush prizes that awaited them.

Taking turns throwing darts and tossing rings, parents and children enjoyed the night filled with fun knowing that, as the weekend continues, so will the fun.

“We are only getting started,” Larkey said.
