Enjoying the great outdoors at Rock Creek Marina

CAMANCHE — Outdoor activities are not always ideal when it’s zero degrees outside, but the Rock Creek Marina and Campground will offer a variety of winter sporting activities in the next few months.

Snow shoeing, ice skating and cross-country skiing are three outdoor activities now being offered by the marina and campground, and park officer Brad Taylor said that now is the perfect time to go out and give them a try.

“As long as there’s a couple inches of snow and six to eight inches of ice, the conditions are favorable,” Taylor said. “And right now there’s plenty of everything.”

For the last two years, park officials have been unable to offer the outdoor sporting activities because of mild winters, but this year, with well above-average snow falls, the season is ideal for all kinds of winter fun.

The marina is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday for rentals.

Visitors are encouraged to venture beyond the campground boundaries and explore the landscape and nature of Rock Creek while cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.

“There’s a little bit of a skill to it but it’s pretty easy to learn,” Taylor said. “Since there’s good ice you can go out into different parts of the park and you can kind of set your own pace. It can be for anybody.”

Although the park doesn’t offer lessons into any of the activities, there is a short explanation with tips and tricks to make the experience a little easier.

So whether novice or expert, everyone is invited to take advantage of the winter activities at Rock Creek Marina and Campground.

“We get all kinds of people. Some that come out every winter to do it, and some that have never done it before. It’s really simple to learn how, be successful and have fun with,” Taylor said. “Last winter we didn’t have a lot of opportunities for it so hopefully we can at least keep it going into February, or maybe even March.”
