Tax levy rate to decline

CAMANCHE — Taxpayers in the Camanche School District will see a decrease in their tax rates for the 2014-2015 budget year.

The school district is proposing a 62-cent decrease in its tax levy rate. District Business Director and Board of Education Secretary/Treasurer Roxanne Aude presented a budget estimate Monday night. The estimate includes a levy rate of $15.06 per $1,000 taxable valuation. She added that the district’s valuation is “pretty strong.”

“It’s nice to have a tax decrease,” Superintendent Tom Parker said. He attributed a lot of the district’s stronger budget to state funding.

Aude explained in a budget presentation that the budget is based on state statues. State statutes do not allow the district to overspend.

“We don’t make it out. It is given to us,” Aude said.

A large portion of the district’s income comes from open enrollment and tuition. An audit report indicates that open enrollment has increased. Monday night the board approved seven open-enrollment requests for this year and 21 requests for next school year.

The district did see a decrease of $71,000 in revenue, primarily due to a reduction in grants and contributions. However, the district’s costs decreased as well.

The audit report also showed very few internal control or compliance issues. The one compliance issue noted was that the district exceeded the budgeted amount for a line item for capital projects, based on the wrap up of the geothermal project. The budget was $654,000 and the actual amount was $830,000. Officials said this was not a major issue as only that one item was over, not the entire budget.

A public hearing on the school district’s budget will be 6:30 p.m. April 7 at the administration center.
